This part of the world
Our trullo is in the centre of the triangle formed by Martina Franca, Locorotondo and Alberobello, with all three about a 10-minute drive away. Martina Franca, with its extraordinary Baroque old town, Locorotondo, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy with its narrow medieval streets in concentric circles, and the UNESCO world heritage site of Alberobello all have an excellent variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. An excellent way to explore the area is by bike using the 230km network of cycle paths, known as the Acquedotto Pugliese, which runs through the Valle d’Itria.
The beautiful ‘white city’ of Ostuni, located on top of a hill with fantastic sea views is about half an hour’s drive east while the stunning cliff-top town of Polignano a Mare and the old harbor town of Monopoli are not much more to the north. A little further away, but within easy day-trip distance, are the famous baroque city of Lecce, ‘The Florence of the South’, and the spectacular cave-dwelling city of Matera.
Puglia is rightly famous for its wines and the Valle d'Itria is at the heart of its viniculture. In recent decades, wine production focusing on local grape varieties and quality over quantity has flourished and we can arrange visits to some amazing local wine-producers.
The sea is around a half-hour drive away, with a choice of the Adriatic to the north or the Ionian to the south, both offering excellent beaches and a wealth of attractive coastal villages. Also within easy reach are the extensive cave complexes at Castellana Grotte and the Egnatia archaeological site.
